CALABAMA                                                                                                                                       crime fiction
Stephen Kelly

The natives in the Red-State interior of Northern California refer to their area as Calabama for its Appalachian-like mix of mountains, lakes, poverty, ignorance, and crime, although toothlessness and banjo playing may have something to do with it too.  When a young wastrel gets mixed up with the moonshine-and-meth mafia in the kidnapping of the local lumber baron that goes horribly awry, his life of pleasurable vice falls apart.  He loses his job, his wife wants a divorce, and his best friend is killed.  And it’s all downhill from there…

Praise for Steve Brewer (who is the same as that Stephen Kelly guy):
“Like Elmore Leonard, the writer whose work his most resembles, Brewer writes with a light and deft touch, bringing style and wit to the crime genre, along with a pleasing gift for character and dialogue.”
--
Chicago Sun-Times

“Steve Brewer’s affinity for storytelling is matched by a wry sense of humor that doesn’t overwhelm the serious aspects of his mysteries.”
--Florida Sun-Sentinel

“Bullets
gives crime fiction fans all the unforgettable characters and fast, fierce action we crave, plus a flavorful overlay of the wry Brewer humor we’ve come to love.”
—Tony Hillerman
