Amy is just out of college, in her first job, living in her first New York apartment with her fiancé, Nate. Except there’s one problem—Nate has broken up with her, and gone home to Chicago. But Amy, who is known as Bean by her family, is determined not to go home to the suburbs to live with her parents. Amy decides she has to try something new, something different, something so not her that it will shock her into meeting new people and getting over Nate. She decides to buy a bicycle. So off to the bike shop she goes, not realizing she has chosen one of the few hard-core road racing bike shops in the city. The shop’s owner, J.P., takes one look at her and declares her to be a bike virgin—someone who has never ridden before. Rather than sending her toward some generic bike shop, J.P. decides—Henry Higgins-like—to make a real cyclist out of her. But Amy is embarrassed by the nickname Bike Virgin, which J.P. only promises to stop calling her once she’s done her first century—a 100 mile bike ride.
Amy begins to emerge from her shell, frizzy haired, charming, and cute. She begins to pedal furiously through her days, making new friends like the brassy Marianne, testing herself against the rigors of long bike rides in tightly grouped packs, gaining a confidence that she didn’t know she could achieve. And she falls for her Bike Mentor—J.P. Brenna Tinkel first learned to ride a bike when she was twenty-two, and found herself with just six months to train for a 350-mile bike ride. She has been published in the New York Times and has contributed to Pedal Pushers, a website for cyclists. She lives in New York with her husband Andy and her newborn twins, and works for Forbes magazine. Bike Virgin is her first novel.
